P.A.Balakrihnan : 20 years experience

We used to adopt mainly 'chalk and talk' as the method of teaching. However used to encourage students to use ICT resources for their co-curricular and club activities. Our students used to present seminars on current and important issues in Chemistry using power point. Students actively participated in the web page setting of the department. Anu Maria Abraham (IIIDC) and Anjaly Tom (IIDC) made presentations in the Seminar sessions conducted by the research forum.

From the admission process itself, students are encouraged to use computers and internet. For applying to admission, students have to fill up online application form and the print out is to be submitted in the college. The selection of students for their Open Course in the V semester was done though college website in the year 2011. The second internal test during the odd semester for open course was be conducted by an online test through college website. On experimental basis, some internal tests were conducted through college website. For obtaining feedback from students, software based on web programming is installed in the college website and this method will be used in future for feedback, which will save time and paper a lot.

Generally, 2 PTS meetings are held in every academic year for each class. The progress of study and performance of students are discussed in the meetings. The attendance and internal grades are provided to the parents in these meetings and a review of the studies of the students is monitored as a whole and individually.

Students are allotted the problems in the topic of study as assignments. They have to solve the problems and submit within the stipulated time. In every course, they have to take a seminar. The topics are allotted as per the choice of the students. If they do not have a choice, the topic is allotted from the department. They can discuss with the faculty before presenting the seminar.

Official tutorial sessions are arranged on the third Wednesday of every month. The students are entertained to meet the faculty members for any problem, personal or related to academic matters on any day. Thus tutorial is an ongoing process and not limited to official sessions. The students, who need counselling are directed to the principal and arrangements for counselling are made by the principal. Remedial coaching is given to slow learners. The slow and fast learners are identified through continuous evaluation by teachers and from their performance in a Basic knowledge test. Students are given motivation classes, career guidance classes etc. Discussion of question papers, problem solving, discussion on tough topics, peer teaching by fast learners etc were conducted. Fast learners are encouraged to appear for competitive exams and other entrance examination for higher studies.

Students have to do project work during their 5th and 6th Semester and the report of the project is to be submitted before a team of examiners comprising of one external and one internal examiner each, at the end of 6th semester. Students are given freedom to choose their project topic and guidance is given by faculty members. They have to perform the project work on their own.

University conducts external examinations for every course in each semester. Internal evaluation carries a weightage of 25%. Internal evaluation has 5 components, Attendance, Seminar, Assignment, and two internal tests. A student present in at least 90% classes gets a grade A for attendance. And students having less than 75% attendance gets E grade and he/she is not eligible to appear for the University Examinations in that semester.

Feedback about teachers and department are collected from students. Feedback on curriculum and department are taken from alumni also. These feedback reports are utilised to understand our status and to make necessary arrangements for modifications on our performance as teachers.

UG Students are not allotted research type of projects. Our faculty members are not approved as Research Guides and not guiding students for M.Phil or Ph.D.

There was a remarkable gathering of parents from the locality to listen to our class on environmental pollution caused by plastic by Prajisha.C (IIDC) and Heavy metal poisoning of food products by Subash.C(IIIDC).. The main topics discussed were

  • Environment Pollution
  • Misuse of Plastic products
  • Role of metals in positive and negative aspects
  • Sustaining life on earth.

The programme conducted by the students under the guidance of Dr. P.K.Indira and Dr. Sindhu Ramachandran Dept. of Chemistry was much applauded by the local public. There was an interaction session which paved way to clear much of the doubts of the public present.

The above programme was continued by the 2008-09 batch on 6-2-09.

By conducting a soap manufacturing project in the nearby Anganvadi at Koovilakam Kundu North. 32 Members from nearby houses attended the class. The participants were very happy to make their own soap and use it. The class was taken by Jisha.C(IIDC) and Riswan(IIDC) under the guidance of the members of Staff Dept. of Chemistry. The discussion following the demonstration helped the local public to learn more about effective use of soap and its manufacture.

2009-10 Batch came forward to conduct a survey on health and hygiene .About 70 houses were covered by the students in several batches. This project was very effective in delivering to the public the cause of epidermics and the urgent need of keeping the environment clean for personnal wellbeing.

A composite awareness was created among the public with regard to scientific way of waste management. A discussion regarding this was conducted at Majduli Anganavadi. The proceeded through 3 sessions .The first session was dealt by Ms.Chithra(IIDC) and Chinju Sreenivas(IIDC) on the topic Health and hygiene and plastic disposal. Second session was about Purification of water by Nirosha.P.K.(IIDC). The third session dealt with experimental demonstration on food adultration.

During the year 2010-11 the project was for soil conservation and motivation of vegetable garden. Samples of soil were collected from in and around   the campus .A detailed examination of samples collected was conducted from the soil testing lab at Malappuram. Based on the result an awareness class was arranged on 23—2-11 for the public fron the nearby locality in the department. Eminent Scientist from Agriculture University Pattmbi Dr. Tulasi and Dr.Prasanna gave a detailed talk on conservation of soil and manuring in a scientific way. A discussion class was followed by distribution of seeds by Mr.,Suresh an agriculturist . A practical way of putting up a kitchen garden was discussed.About 50 members from public attended the session. Their feed back was appreciative and was very happy to receive packets of seeds to make their own kitchen garden.

2011-12 Batch came forward to conduct a survey on the word of drugs. Based on the survey conducted in medical shops and nearby houses they collected details about the misuse of drugs. Most of the people were suffering from life style diseases such as blood pressure, cholesterol, cardiac diseases etc. Some of them follows proper treatment and medication. But most of the people take self medication. There is a tendency to stop the treatment before the completion of dosage. It leads the situation to be worse. There are some side effects due to the over usage of drugs. Based on the result from the survey they conducted AN AWARENESS CLASS in association with Alumni CARBON . In the class lead by lead by Mr. Sanjeev, Area Sales Manager, Astra Zenicca and Mr. Devan Senior sales executive, Dr.Reddys Laboratory they stressed that we should follow proper medication for all diseases based on the instruction of doctor and should complete the course of medicine.
